Australia’s sperm shortage is leading some to find donors online


BACK when Haydn Allbutt donated sperm, it was a relatively simple process — so simple that he did it about 20 times over the space of a year.

It was 1997 and the then 21-year-old student would pop into a nearby clinic, do his business, collect $25 for his troubles and continue on his way.

His semen was to be used for a variety of research purposes, but he knew it could also be offered to women who wanted help having a baby, which didn’t faze him.

“I didn’t have a girlfriend and I didn’t think there was a likelihood I would ever get one, so I thought it was the only way to pass my genes on, I suppose.”
