In
response to the Nov. 12 letter "Gays
can't procreate 'naturally,'" I used
to feel the same despite the fact
that I am homosexual. I felt the
population was large enough and
enough children were in "unnatural"
environments (e.g., divorced
families) as it was, so why create
more? It occurred to me, however,
that many heterosexual couples use
methods such as in vitro
fertilization and surrogacy to have
children, and few people have a
problem with that. There are several
medical options available to enhance
or prolong life that are
"unnatural," such as pacemakers,
organ transplants and life support
methods.
Same-sex couples who go to great
lengths to have a child must really
want that child. What could be a
better formula to create a happy
child than two devoted parents?
Children are born all the time to
parents who don't really want them.
Nothing could be more damaging to a
child. Scientific studies
demonstrate that children of
same-sex parents are as
well-adjusted as children of
heterosexual parents. Furthermore,
there are many same-sex couples who
have children from pervious
heterosexual marriages and those
families cannot be discredited.
Legally, all parents and children
should have equal protection.
